Melbourne Moving to Stage 2

Water restrictions for Melbourne will be eased to Stage 2 from 1 September 2010.

The very welcome recent rain, fantastic water saving efforts by households and the Government’s major water projects mean our storages are recovering well and should hit 40 per cent very soon.

Under Stage 2, Melburnians will be able to:

  • Use a hose fitted with a trigger nozzle, watering can or bucket to water gardens at any time;
  • Wash cars at home with either a bucket or a high pressure, water saving hose;
  • Water gardens with a manual watering system between 6-8am and 8-10pm on alternate days; (If you are aged over 70 you can water between 8-10am in the morning);
  • Water gardens with an automatic watering system between midnight and 4am on alternate days; and
  • Fill spas and smaller pools, such as children’s inflatable play pools.

A number of the Government’s major water projects are now coming online or nearing completion. The Sugarloaf Pipeline and the Tarago Reservoir project have added more than 60 billion litres of water to storages. From the end of next year, the desalination plant will start supplying up to 150 billion litres a year.

The Target 155 program has been an outstanding success with Melburnians now using an average of just 147 litres per day. Relaxing restrictions will allow people more flexibility but I would encourage people to continue to keep to Target 155 and continue to use water wisely.
